SNETTERTON 300 RACE REPORT – STUDENT MOTORSPORT CITY CAR CUP

SNETTERTON 300 RACE REPORT - STUDENT MOTORSPORT CITY CAR CUP

Pitlane Development completed a productive but mixed weekend at Snetterton 300 with Luke Sawyer making his first appearance for the team in Car #34.

The weekend began with a full Friday test programme before qualifying and Race One on Saturday, followed by three races on Sunday. Across the event, Luke continued to adapt to the car and the team, while the engineering crew worked to improve the car’s balance and overall performance.

Although two races ended prematurely following incidents, the underlying pace was encouraging. Luke’s lap times improved throughout the weekend, culminating in a 2:39.356 in Race Four, the fastest recorded lap of the weekend.

FRIDAY TESTING:

Friday provided an important opportunity for Luke to familiarise himself with the car, Snetterton 300 and the team’s working processes. Four test sessions were completed, giving the team significant running and allowing progressive setup work throughout the day.

Luke began the opening session with a best lap of 2:42.468. Initial feedback suggested that the car had good front-end response, although the rear was more nervous through faster corners. Changes were made as the day progressed to improve confidence and stability.

The improvements were immediately reflected in the lap times. Luke recorded a 2:40.084 during Test Two before improving further to a 2:39.647 in Test Three. The final session focused on consolidating the day’s work rather than outright lap time. By the end of testing, the team had established a strong baseline for the competitive sessions.

SATURDAY - QUALIFLYING

Saturday morning’s qualifying session proved challenging, particularly with traffic around the busy Snetterton 300 circuit. Luke’s first representative lap was a 2:40.706, before setting his qualifying best of 2:40.630 on his final recorded lap.

Despite the strong test day on Friday, the team was unable to translate the expected pace into the qualifying result. Straight-line performance was identified as an area requiring further attention ahead of Race One. The session left the team further down the order than hoped in P13, but with confidence that there was considerably more performance available during the races.

Luke made a solid start to Race One and remained in contention as the race developed. His pace improved lap by lap, progressing from a 2:41.895 to 2:40.697 before recording a 2:39.968 on lap four. This demonstrated that both Luke and the car were becoming stronger as the race progressed.

Unfortunately, the race ended at Turn One with 3 minutes left of the race. Lift-off oversteer resulted in Luke spinning and making contact with the wall. The initial impact looked significant, but inspection showed that the majority of the damage was cosmetic. The team immediately began repairs and successfully prepared Car #34 for Sunday’s racing.

Best lap: 2:39.968 | Result: DNF

SATURDAY - RACE 1 - DNF

SUNDAY - RACE 2 - P12

Sunday’s opening race was an extremely disrupted contest. The race included an early red flag, a restart and re-grid, an additional formation lap and a later Safety Car period. The interruptions ultimately resulted in a shortened race and made it difficult for any driver to establish a consistent rhythm.

Despite this, Luke made strong progress through the field. Having effectively been required to make up positions twice following the restart and re-grid, he ultimately gained five places overall. A 2:42.575 represented his fastest competitive lap during the limited green-flag running.

The result represented the team’s strongest finish of the weekend at that stage and provided an encouraging response following Saturday’s retirement.

SUNDAY - RACE 3 - P10

Race Three provided the cleanest opportunity of the weekend for Luke to demonstrate his progress.

After losing several positions during the opening lap, he responded strongly and began working his way back through the field. Lap times quickly fell from 2:41.708 to 2:39.740, with Luke then consistently circulating around the 2:40 mark.

With no major problems affecting the car, Luke was able to concentrate on moving forward and picking off cars ahead. His progress resulted in an improved P10 in class, continuing the positive trajectory established earlier on Sunday. The session also provided useful confirmation that the car’s overall balance was working well.

SUNDAY - RACE 4 - DNF

The final race produced some of the most encouraging pace of the weekend but ultimately ended in another retirement.

Luke lost a couple of positions on the opening lap but remained firmly in the fight to recover them. His pace continued to improve as the race developed, culminating in a 2:39.356 on lap four. This was the fastest lap recorded by Car #34 across the entire Snetterton weekend, including Friday testing.

With just over a minute remaining, a poor decision from another competitor resulted in Luke being punted off track. The resulting damage caused the rear bumper to rub against a rear tyre, producing smoke and affecting the car.

Although the damage was relatively minor, Luke made the mature decision to bring the car into the pit lane and retire rather than risk a tyre failure or further damage. Although the DNF was disappointing, the performance before the incident reinforced the progress made across the weekend.

WEEKEND SUMMARY

Snetterton ultimately produced a mixed set of results but a positive overall performance trend for Pitlane Development.

Two DNFs prevented the final results from fully reflecting the pace of the car and driver. However, there were several important positives: Luke adapted quickly, progressed through the field during the races, achieved P10 in class and produced his fastest lap of the weekend in the final race.

His decision to retire the car following contact in Race Four also demonstrated good judgement, avoiding the risk of further mechanical damage. It was great to welcome Luke Sawyer into the Pitlane Development team and see his confidence and performance develop throughout the event.

The team leaves Snetterton knowing that Car #34 has strong underlying pace, while also having identified clear areas to continue developing before the final meeting.
