STEP 1 - CHOOSE YOUR CAREER FIELD
Motorsport is much bigger than drivers and race engineers.
Race teams and manufacturers require people across engineering, mechanics, data, design, logistics, marketing, commercial operations and many other areas. Your first step should be understanding what roles exist and which ones match your skills and interests. You could explore careers in:

STEP 2 - CHOOSE THE RIGHT EDUCATION
There isn’t one qualification that gets you into motorsport.
The right education depends on the career you’re trying to build. For some roles, a university degree may be the strongest route. For others, an apprenticeship, college qualification or practical experience could be more valuable. Before choosing a course, ask yourself:
What job am I aiming for?
What qualifications do employers ask for?
Would practical experience strengthen my application?
Could an apprenticeship be a better route than university?

STEP 3 - BUILD YOUR MOTORSPORT NETWORK
Motorsport is a small industry. Start building your network early.
Your qualifications and experience matter, but so do the relationships you build along the way. You don’t need to know a Formula 1 Team Principal to start networking. Start small.
Attend club-level race meetings. Connect with engineers and mechanics on LinkedIn. Speak to teams in the paddock. Attend careers events. Follow companies you’re interested in working for. Most importantly, don’t wait until you need a job before you start networking.
Build genuine relationships and take an interest in what other people are doing. Your network should grow alongside your career.
STEP 4 - GAIN REAL EXPERIENCE
One of the biggest challenges facing aspiring motorsport professionals is getting that first piece of relevant experience. Employers want to see that you understand what working in motorsport actually involves.
That could come through:
APPRENTICESHIPS
Combine employment with structured training and qualifications. Available at all levels.
GRADUATE PROGRAMMES
Structured routes into larger motorsport organisations and Formula One teams.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Short placements with teams, manufacturers and motorsport businesses to learn fundamental skills.
INTERNSHIPS
Gain industry experience while studying. Normally seen as a placement year while at University
STEP 5 - GET APPLICATION READY
When the right position appears, you need to give yourself the best possible chance of securing it. That means preparing more than just your CV.
Focus on five areas:
CV — Clearly demonstrate your relevant skills, experience and achievements.
Cover Letter — Explain why you’re interested in that specific opportunity.
ATS — Understand how Applicant Tracking Systems may assess your application.
LinkedIn — Build a professional profile that supports your CV and networking.
Interview Preparation — Be ready to explain your experience and demonstrate why you’re the right person for the opportunity.
