The commercial and business side of motorsport is vast and involves a complex ecosystem of sponsorships, broadcasting rights, merchandise, team ownership, and various other revenue-generating activities. Project deliverables and requirements need to be understood and managed to ensure that tight deadlines are met. In this section we are going to discuss some of these roles in more detail.
WHAT TO STUDY
Qualification wise you will need at least a 2:1 or above at degree or masters level in business or accounting. For project management based roles it would be idea to have a degree in either motorsport, mechanical, electrical or aeronautical engineering along with a formally recognised project management qualification like PRINCE2.
JOB DESCRIPTIONS
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER
- Identify and pursue new business opportunities within the motorsport sector, including potential clients, sponsors, and partners.
- Build relationships with key decision-makers in the motorsport world, such as sponsors, team owners, manufacturers, and media.
- Develop and execute strategic business plans to drive growth, including new partnerships, collaborations, and revenue streams.
- Conduct market research to identify trends, competitor activities, and emerging opportunities in the motorsport industry.
- Lead the negotiation and securing of commercial partnerships and sponsorships for motorsport teams, events, and activities.
- Work with the marketing team to develop compelling sponsorship proposals and promotional strategies.
- Foster long-term relationships with sponsors and partners, ensuring satisfaction and maximising value for both parties.
SCRUM MASTER
- Organise and facilitate all Scrum ceremonies, including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, sprint reviews, and retrospectives.
- Ensure that these events are productive, time-boxed, and focused on their objectives.
- Promote a culture of self-organisation, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Act as a shield for the team, protecting them from external distractions and interruptions.
- Mentor team members, product owners, and stakeholders on Agile principles and the Scrum framework.
- Ensure the team has a clear understanding of sprint goals and priorities.
- Identify and address any obstacles that may hinder the team’s progress, ensuring a smooth workflow.
- Assist the product owner in maintaining and refining the product backlog.
- Encourage open communication, trust, and transparency within the team and across stakeholders.
- Support the adoption of Agile methodologies across departments or the wider organisation.
PROJECT MANAGER
- Define project scope, objectives, and deliverables in collaboration with stakeholders.
- Develop detailed project plans, including timelines, budgets, and resource allocation.
- Manage multiple motorsport projects simultaneously, ensuring timely and cost-effective delivery.
- Lead cross-functional teams, including engineers, designers, logistics, and marketing personnel.
- Assign responsibilities and monitor team performance to meet project goals.
- Act as the primary point of contact for clients and stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
- Regularly update clients on project progress, milestones, and potential risks.
- Prepare and manage project budgets, including cost estimates and financial reports.
- Identify potential project risks and develop mitigation strategies.
- Ensure compliance with motorsport industry regulations and safety standards.

- Define the programme’s scope, objectives, and success metrics in collaboration with leadership and stakeholders.
- Establish and manage a cohesive roadmap, aligning individual projects with the overarching programme strategy.
- Ensure integration and synchronisation of all projects under the programme to achieve desired outcomes.
- Act as the main point of contact for programme-related communications with internal and external stakeholders.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with teams, sponsors, and regulatory bodies such as FIA.
- Lead and mentor project managers and cross-functional teams, fostering a culture of collaboration and accountability.
- Allocate resources effectively, ensuring all teams have the tools and support needed to succeed.
