PITLANE DEVELOPMENT ANNOUNCE LUKE SAWYER AS FIRST DRIVER FOR EXPANDED 2027 CITY CAR CUP CAMPAIGN
Pitlane Development is delighted to announce Luke Sawyer as its first confirmed driver for the 2027 BRSCC City Car Cup Championship, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter as the team prepares to expand to a two-driver line-up.
Following a promising appearance with the team during the 2026 season, Luke will return to Pitlane Development for the upcoming championship campaign, building upon an established relationship and valuable experience gained behind the wheel of the team’s Peugeot 107.
The announcement represents another significant milestone for Pitlane Development, which is preparing to expand its racing operations following its inaugural season in the championship. With two drivers set to represent the team in 2027, the expansion will also create further opportunities for aspiring motorsport engineers, mechanics and other industry professionals to gain valuable hands-on experience in a competitive racing environment.
WHO IS LUKE SAYWER?
Luke Sawyer is an emerging British racing driver with a strong background in competitive sim racing and growing experience within real-world motorsport. A British University Sim Racing Champion, Luke has demonstrated considerable talent in the virtual racing environment, developing skills in race craft, strategy, consistency and vehicle control.
His transition into circuit racing has seen him compete in the BRSCC City Car Cup Championship, gaining experience with NSCG Motorsport and Waltham Forest College before joining Pitlane Development for the Snetterton 300 race weekend in 2026.
Despite limited time behind the wheel of the team’s Peugeot 107, Luke quickly settled into the environment and demonstrated promising pace, adaptability and a positive approach to working alongside the team’s developing engineers and mechanics.
Beyond his on-track performance, Luke’s approach to technical feedback, preparation and teamwork impressed the team, providing a strong foundation for his return in 2027.
With an established relationship already in place, the focus now shifts towards building consistency, developing performance and preparing for a full championship campaign.
From karting and sim-racing success to a full-time City Car Cup seat with Pitlane Development.
The journey begins
Luke made his karting debut at Fastlane Karting Stoke on 23 February, finishing third in his first session. By July he had claimed his first victory, before winning a sim-racing competition at Williams F1 HQ in September against approximately 150 competitors.
Records, podiums and a first championship win
Luke stepped into the 3S120 Team Enduro Championship at Three Sisters, securing his first podium in July and further podiums later in the season. He set a 25.855-second lap record at Fastlane Karting Stoke, visited Mercedes F1 HQ for an esports experience, and took his first 3S120 victory in November. Three podiums from six races helped his team finish third overall.
Building racecraft and sim-racing momentum
Further 3S120 success included victory in the opening round in March and another win in June, when Luke completed more than an hour of racing with a reduced driver lineup. In October, he made his British University Sim Racing F1 Winter Championship debut, immediately securing pole position at Monza.
From virtual champion to circuit racer
Luke made his City Car Cup debut with NSCG Racing at Brands Hatch in April and raced at Snetterton in May. He then stepped in for Waltham Forest College at Croft in July and Pitlane Development at Snetterton 300 in September. In August, he won the British University Sim Racing F1 Summer Championship, earning his first sim-racing championship title after a maiden race victory in Canada.
A full-season opportunity with Pitlane Development
Following his substitute appearance for Pitlane Development in 2026, Luke was confirmed in October as one of the team’s drivers for the 2027 City Car Cup season. The focus now turns to structured pre-season testing, consistent seat time and driver coaching as he prepares for his first full campaign with the team.
A WORD FROM THE TEAM AND LUKE
"Luke has had a real rollercoaster of a season in 2026, stepping into different cars and teams, often with very little preparation or seat time. Despite those challenges, he's adapted incredibly well to each situation and shown a level of determination and maturity that has really impressed us. What excites me most about Luke is the potential we've seen. He's already demonstrated that he has the ability, but with consistent seat time, structured coaching and the opportunity to properly develop alongside the same team throughout a full season, I genuinely believe we'll see considerable progress from him over the course of 2027. We're not expecting everything to happen overnight. Our focus is on giving Luke the right environment, support and experience to develop his confidence, consistency and outright pace. I'm confident that as the season progresses, we'll see that hard work translate into results on track. I'm absolutely delighted to have Luke on board as our first confirmed driver for 2027, and I'm really looking forward to seeing what we can achieve together."
Ollie Walsh - Team Principle
"I'm really excited to be joining Pitlane Development as a full-time driver for the 2027 season. After a challenging 2026, where I had to adapt to different teams and cars throughout the year, it's a fantastic opportunity to have a consistent programme and a team behind me for an entire championship. My experience with Pitlane Development at Snetterton gave me a great insight into how the team operates, and I really enjoyed working with everyone. There's a huge amount of passion and determination within the team, and I'm looking forward to being part of its next chapter. Having the opportunity to get plenty of testing and seat time before the season starts will be really important for my development. I know there's still a lot for me to learn, but with the support, coaching and experience available at Pitlane Development, I'm confident we can make some big steps forward throughout the year. I can't wait to get started, work towards some strong results and see what we can achieve together in 2027."

LOOKING AHEAD TO THE 2027 SEASON
With preparations already underway, pre-season testing will be a key priority for Pitlane Development as the team looks to provide Luke with valuable seat time ahead of the opening championship round. The focus will be on building his confidence, consistency and technical understanding of the Peugeot 107, while working closely with the team’s engineers and mechanics to maximise performance. Building upon the lessons learned during its inaugural season, Pitlane Development is looking forward to taking another step forward in 2027, combining its expanded two-driver programme with its continued commitment to developing emerging motorsport talent. Further announcements regarding the team’s second driver, partners and championship preparations will follow in due course.
