APPRENTICESHIPS – HOW TO FIND AND SECURE YOURS
Not everyone has the university route in mind when pursuing a career in motorsport. Some prefer to learn whist working on the job. Finding a motorsport apprenticeship can be an exciting way and challenging way to start a career in the motorsport industry. Here are some steps you can take to find and secure that apprenticeship:

1# – Research Teams and Manufactures:
Start by researching motorsport teams, manufactures and companies involved in motorsport within your local area. Then identify the ones that offer apprenticeship programs. If there are none local you may need to consider looking further afield. Motorsport teams in various disciplines, such as Formula 1, Formula E, BTCC normally offer apprenticeships on their website. This is not always the case though and some teams post apprenticeship openings on external websites such as motorsport jobs and race staff. You can use relevant keywords like “motorsport apprenticeship” or “racing team apprenticeship” to search for openings.
#2 – Contact Motorsport Colleges and Universities:
Reach out to motorsport colleges and universities around the UK and get in touch with the careers department. They should be be able to best advise you on the general direction or at least point you in the direction of somebody on site that can help. They may also have connections with racing teams or organisations that offer apprenticeships. In the rare instance they may also have job boards specific to the motorsport industry.
The educational establishments should also be able to advise you on any courses they feel will benefit you prior to gaining that apprenticeship.
#3 – Network within the industry:
Attend motorsport events, races, and industry trade shows if possible. Networking is a powerful way to learn about potential apprenticeship opportunities. Once you find an apprenticeship opportunity, prepare a well-crafted application. This includes a CV highlighting relevant skills and experiences, a cover letter explaining your passion for motorsport and any required application forms. Familiarise yourself with the specific team or organisation you’re applying to and the motorsport discipline they are involved in.

#5 – Boosting Your Skillset: (Internships and Volunteering)
If you’re struggling to find paid apprenticeships, consider internships or volunteer positions within the motorsport industry to widen your skillset and make yourself more appealing to potential employers. These experiences can help you build connections and gain valuable skills that may lead to future apprenticeship opportunities. This could include hands on work or even marshalling at a specific race weekend. All experience is valuable experience.

Attaining a motorsport apprenticeships will be competitive, so don’t get discouraged if you don’t succeed on your first attempt. Keep applying, refining your skills, and networking within the industry. Persistance is the key to achieving any goal in life and you will learn some valuable lessons along the way.
